Many people believe that the U.S. might take action against Iran because they believe that Iran is building nuclear weapons.

Right now there is a carrier strike force positioned so that it could strike Iran if the White House gives the order. The US military obviously has contingency plans for this operation.

If it happens - if the US attacks Iran - how will Russia and China respond? Would they retaliate against the US?

It's pretty much a given that Iran is untouchable. Not that Russia or China will retaliate, but Iran is capable by itself to bring the U.S. down to its knees (at the cost of the state of Iran itself).

The sheer amount of instability that Iran would bring to the middle east if invaded would be a major kick in the teeth for the U.S. And Russia and China know this and don't need to do anything.

Right now diplomacy, sanctions and those big guns seem to be working. President AMDJ is just third in command. He has a powerful well funded army. But The Grand Ayatollah look him up, wants peace & energy drive nuc plants. He's still boss. So we should see this at a stand off. Yet the media over there is really hating America. Working to inspire some show of resistance.
Thanks for the input !!
above answered involvement best and I agree, does not seem likely...

They would not get involved, any more than they did in Iraq. The run up in oil prices that would happen would benefit Russia as an oil exporter, and some say that Putin is actually promoting trouble in the middle east for that purpose. China would be hurt economically, and would probably support Iran in the UN, but their only real interest in the region is oil.

initially, we are able to obliterate Pakistan or Iran in a pair of 2nd in spite of if the latter does advance nuclear weapons, because of the fact we've one hundred for one and all they do and we've the transport automobiles. Russia would not intrude, because of the fact to realize this would be to commit national suicide. In a usual war, we'd win against the Iranians in someplace between 3 and 5 seconds. remember how long it took us to defeat Iraq? the two circumstances. Resistance would desire to final longer, sure, yet in that kind of war, we would not care. the only way a severe-high quality capability could be pushed out in one among those difficulty is that if it comes to a decision the stakes are not well worth it. finally, China won't be able to destoy us economically -- we are plenty extra important to them than they are to us and that they are in basic terms a small share of our GDP. in actuality, the biggest prefer they might do to us is to refuse to commerce with us. extra to the element, they might not. China relies upon on us and something of the stepped forward worldwide for its financial progression, and that they know that. they are way too clever to combat this. clever worldwide places like China know that financial progression comes first. Dumb ones like Iran in basic terms combat and, unavoidably, lose to their wealthier, extra stepped forward enemies.
