My friend and I were wondering what the difference is because we are looking for christmas gift ideas.

An iPod IS an mp3 player. An mp3 player is a little device that plays songs.
However, that's ALL that some mp3 players do. They just play songs. You can get a cheap one for $30 or so.
An iPod, now, it does just about everything! It depends on what you get, but some of them play videos, movies, hold your pictures, play games, and more! They hold thousands of songs.
If you were thinking of getting one, I'd recommend the 2nd generation Nano. It's pretty good. Or the 5th generation video (which is what I have).

Ipods are mp3 but a newer version because there is more function and you can play games or watch movie if it is a video ipod and some mp3 can be a usb storage now ipod cant do that. Ipods can only use mp3 songs but mp3 can use lots of type like wma,play and mp3.

Well, I have an mp3 player, but I like ipods more. Ipods are more "popular" these days, and also have a simple and clean design. They also make a good fashion item too...The bad side is that you can only use iTunes and can't get songs from other places..like some sites may have better prices.
Mp3 players allow you to download from other sites. It saves money too. I think you should get people ipods, I think they'll like them more.

Ipod is a brand, mp3 players are more universal. If you are looking for a present, you could consider the newest out - an mp4 player. there are wide varieties - brands, prices, etc. mostly due to how many songs you want it to hold.
