Do you really want to buy stocks that are doing really well right now? Ones that have already rung up gains of 50%, 100%, 150%? Or do you want to buy stocks that are out of favor right now and are relatively cheap? Personally I don't invest for the short term (less than 5 years) and it appears your school project is just for a few months. Any investing over that short a period is a crap shoot. The company I'm buying now is one called Composite Technologies (CPTC). It's recently fallen from $2.05 to $1.61 and is in the business of making wind turbines and a special wire that conducts electricity much more efficiently than current wire. Both "green" products. It may not take off in the next 2-3 months, but I think it will in the next 2-3 years. Good luck.

Etrade Scottrade Schwab TD Ameritrade At any of the above, you can set up an account, deposit some money with them, and begin trading. You must be 18 years old. All three are online brokerage firms where the cost per trade is low but they offer little or no support. If you want to trade some of the more complex instruments, they may make you prove a certain amount of past experience or keep a large amount of cash on deposit.

Well if you are studying the market, you know that it pretty much semi crashed. And I am doing the same thing too at school, I would go with Petro China, they are doing extremely well. Also Google and Baidu (chinese google). But just remember what goes up (really up) will come down & sell high, buy low.

remember the stock market fluctuates, stick with apple it WILL go up, google, tho it is expensive, is doing really well. keep your eyes open, when you hear about a new product from a company, its probably too late to get it cheap.

Google is doing really well. I would also try an energy stock, like Valero, for example.
