The death penalty was removed for murder some years ago, leaving high treason and piracy as the only capital offences in Britain. Then on the 10th of December 1999, International Human Rights Day, the government ratified Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights thus totally abolishing capital punishment in Britain.

There is a common myth that treason carries a death penalty in the UK. It doesn't. It DID, but now it doesn't.

Are charges of terrorism, murder, causing explosions etc not enough? Treason trials really are just show trials. Always were.

I think that the death penalty for treason was one of those laws that were still on the statute books - like being able to kill Scotsmen who are carrying bows in the main street, but are not ab;le to be enforced as they have been superseded by newer acts.
Pity!

As already pointed out, it does not carry the death penalty and never should have. Many so-called 'terrorists' were only trying to get free of the tyrannical British yoke.

Death penalty for treason was abolished, but even British citizens should be charged with treason if that is what they are guilty of.

and setting fire in a naval dockyard...

and yes, treason is unforgivable in this day and age, where nationality and honour should stand side by side.

acts of terrorism, and sedition, shoudl carry the harshest penalty... freedom cost more than money. and without integrity, where are we?

and, when johnny foreigner breaks the law, for an imprisonable offence, they shoudl be automatically deported.

and for the humane amonst us. to keep a crim in jail for 30 yrs, means the state is investing 1 million pounds in the guys rehabilitation (fridays guardian)

so, were better off killing these terrorists and openin a few hospital wards, giving our schoolkids new books, better funding to plod...

10 terrorist = 1 new hospital.. seems a fair trade to me.
