Well, you can start looking at Ebay for used machinery, or other specialty auction houses. (There are several that deal specifically with wood working machines)
Names to look for are Oliver, Powermatic, Yates, Smith, and Orton, to name a few.
I once managed a shop where we had an old Oliver planer, dated back to the late 1940's hehe... and it still did an excellent job.
You can find some smaller 'open ended' machines, but you have to be careful not to put too much stress on the machine, its not braced as well as those old cast iron machines, hehe.
$1500 to $3000 is what I would expect to pay for an old (stress OLD) machine, and it may not necessarily be working. New machines will run considerably higher.
If youve only got one piece of wood to plane, I'd suggest a good handplaner, and a little ingenuity. You can rig a sling mount for the hand planer, and carriage assembly for it to slide along. It would be slow, but a lot cheaper than buying a big machine for a single run. Ive seen this type of arrangement made to work columns, and tapering extremely large pieces of wood.
By the way, an industrial size planer can take up to 1/8" off in one pass... most sanders should only be used to take off 1/16" at most... its more common to take off only 1/32" (or less) with a wide belt sander.
Have Fun

most planers for home users go only 13 inches wide,, some larger versions for the pros may go to 20 inches,, larger ones are only in factories... expect to pay over $2000 for a good one that does around 20 iches..

Go to a woodworking magazine's advertisement. A 16" open side sander should do it.
You can do it by hand if you got skillz... but then you wouldn't ask.
You could phone woodworking shops too.
