For free antivirus software go to www.avast.com it is free to private users and all you have to do is register. I havd had it for two years and it is pretty easy to use. It will also give you a warning when a download has a virus. This is a few example from many many features. But I am happy with and no complaints. I would unistall the Norton software and do disk clean up. You can also search for cookie, temporary internet files and history files on your computer and delete them. If there are old programs you never use in your control panel, than it would be a good idea to get rid of them because all they are doing is taking up space.

Most of the bigger security suites will cause some lag if you do not have a fast CPU and a good portion of RAM.
There are also alot of additional services that those programs can install that may not be necessary.
You will probably want a professional tech to look at these though.
I use McAfee which I have also heard lag complaints about but not nearly as many as Norton..however, I have never experienced any lag with McAfee. Also, I properly configure it.. such as turning off the splash screen and turning off informational alerts.
If you are experiencing a lot of lag (to an abnormal degree) I would suggest that you contact Symantec's technical support before you uninstall the thing you've paid good money for. They will be able to walk you through configuring it to your liking and if they don't try McAfee or consider upgrading your system.
You may also have tons of background services and programs running that you're not aware of which may be the real cause and Norton just tipped the scale... a professional tech or symantec techs can walk you through configuring this as well.
If you want to be completely protected and not using crapware from freebie sites then you really are better off with a little lag and total protection.
Good Luck

all depends on your processor. Norton 2004 was designed for Pentium 4. If you are using Core2Duo or Dual Core processors, you should use Norton 2007 or even 2008.
If nothing has changed in your platform, you may infected with some virus.
You need to do a full scanning with system recovery off. The problem with Norton is it would never scan temp folder but some virus did hide in temp folder.
If still not work, you may need to use McAfee or F-secure instead, both are better detection on hiding virus.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

That's the trade off. Most scanner software does slow a pc down.
You can offset this by going to blackvipers site & turning off unneeded services.
You can use msconfig to stop programs from running at startup.
You can use processexplorer to see what programs are running & stop them.
You should also get ccleaner & clean your pc of junk all of which slows a pc down after awhile. Then run scandisk & defragment from your system tools.
Doing all the above can help speed up your pc. + you might want to consider getting more ram.
You can't get rid of your virus protection & firewall unless you replace them with something else. They are programs you have to have.

Norton is notorious for being a major system lag. Make sure you have windows xp updated to SP2, and then uninstall Norton, enable windows firewall then download avast! antivirus. Do a boot-time scan, and once rebooted, do a second scan after letting Avast! update its definitions. You're system should run much faster. I would also recommend using Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007 and SpyBot Search & Destory 1.5
