At a coast line I found a shell in a tree back in the nearby forest. Going back to my geography lessons, would this be because years ago the coast line was where the forest used to be, but due to succession and longshore drift, the coastline expanded outwards?

Maybe when the tree was small, strong waves must have brought the water plus the sand plus the shells to beat against the sea front. Maybe there was a tsunami and the shell got stuck in the little tree and as the tree grew, it became part of the bark of the tree.
Or maybe your theory can also be correct.

No. Are you sure it wasn't a shell from a tree snail? Some varieties have shells that look almost like marine snail shells. See the link.

the tree wasn't around way back then and if it was the water woulda drowned it. most likely a bird had lunch up there.

That tree would not have been there that long ago.
Was it a hermit crab (tree crab?)
Did someone put it there & you coincidentally found it?

nope, thayt would take millions of yesrs and the sheel would be long gone by then, it was likely carried by birds and eaten, and the shell was left over
