My fiancee used to want to be a game programmer, until he found out what the typical working conditions are like. The pay is decent, but the hours are not. Every game company requires programmers to work overtime when a deadline is near. However, at companies like EA that make a lot of games, a deadline is ALWAYS approaching, so the programmers regularly work 14+ hour days six days a week, with a half day off on Sunday if they get enough done. EA wasn't paying overtime pay, and they actually went to court for it. But overall, most game companies can do this because so many people want to be game programmers, and if they burn out quickly they are easily replaced.
