Because women can OVULATE at irregular times, that's the problem. Women can take a good guess at it but can't tell for sure exactly when they ovulate, and coupled with the fact sperm can live inside a woman for several days after ejaculation then there's a pretty wide window of time during a cycle when conception is possible.
For example, suppose you think you will ovulate sometiem between day 11 and day 15 of your cycle - this means that could potentially be fertile from day 8 through 16. That's a long time! And what if you are wrong and don't ovulate until day 20? Or day 22? Or ovulate early on day 9?
I mean - just use protection EVERY TIME.

An egg is released once during a cycle, usually, but the egg does not exit the body immediately. It stays in the body for at least a couple of days. The time after the release of the egg is the prime time to get pregnant. But there is always a very small chance at any other time in a person's cycle of getting pregnant, because sometimes things don't always work perfectly.

It doesn't literally mean at any time. It just means you don't really have any way of being 100% sure when you're going to ovulate, and sperm can live inside the vagina for up to 5 days. It's just very risky to assume that you KNOW which days you can get pregnant.

Some women, though rare, release more than one egg. Thats why there are twins. And not all people ovulate at the same time each month either.

Because, you could ovulate irregularly. Some women do NOT ovulate at all - others could ovulate right AFTER or just BEFORE their period - even if they have regular menstrual cycles.
So - you can get pregnant at any time in your cycle b/c you never know when you might ovulate.

The key word is "prime" It is a prime time during ovulation. But the egg still exist until you have your period.
