I always buy a few bags of the mixed nuts, which consist of walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts and brazil nuts. After the holiday season is over I have a load of brazil nuts leftover. @#$! things are almost impossible to open! I've been known to take them out to the garage and put them in the vice to open them! Anybody wanna buy some brazil nuts???

I have left over Brazil nuts too. You and I could sell'em to somebody for next year! lol

Now pecans don't last no time in this house. Not even the shells. We save the shells and then when my hubby starts his smoker in the back yard, he wets the shells some and puts them in with the coals and the meat takes on that pecan taste. Mmmm good!

I do have a bowl of mixed nuts out for the holiday. But the only kind that I put out is the soft "meated" ones. Like pecans, walnuts, and cashews. Lol, none of us have good enough teeth to chew the hard ones. Since we have pecan trees all around us and also one walnut tree, the only nuts that I have to buy are the cashews. I love roasting all the nuts and then putting them out to eat. There are no shortage of pecans here in this town, so I have pecans year round if I want.

Brazil nuts are my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE!! Have been since I was just a little girl....

If you take your set of nutcrackers (the old fashioned two metal arms kind, connected with a metal arch) and LIGHTLY crack the nut all the way around beginning at one end and progressing to the other. Then starting all over again, until you have the whole outer shell lightly cracked. THEN, you turn the nut long end on to the two bars and squeeze until the shell opens, you should be able to pull the whole thing off in one go.

But the cracking has to be done lightly...only lightly bruising the nutmeat, and not cracking it.

A bowl of nuts has always been set out, in our home, at Christmas time. I carried this tradition forward too!

Nuts I purchase:
Brazil
Hazel
Walnut
Almonds

I usually have no nuts left and am asked to get more. I live in pecan country but, I am highly allergic so, no pecans! I buy everyone's favorites and so leftovers are rare!

Yes, we loved putting out a bowl of mixed nuts. Usually none are left over, including the Brazils (my favourite.)

Even when I put out a bowl of pre-shelled nuts, it's the Brazil nuts that are always left over!

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but I love cashews, walnuts, and pistachios.

As a child we used to have a bowl of nuts too and you needed the nut cracker to open them, but I prefer the nuts I listed above. Oh and the walnuts are easy to open, because there so big.

We love nuts in our family. Think the Brazil nuts are all of our favorite. If you put them in the freezer, it makes it easier to get the meat out. Just crack them with a small hammer. The freezer cold pulls the meat from the sides. We don't generally have many nuts left. Except for the ones in my family itself! Send'em my way!!
