It just occured to me that they have the same job with their respective teams. Also, who did their job more effectively? I remember Barnaby being just a pest, but Avery has a method to his madness. Your thoughts?

To answer your question Avery is by far more annoying, on or off the ice. No one talks about Barnaby being the agitator or overall prick that Avery is. That being said, I am a die hard rangers fan and think that Avery is one of the best trade the rangers have ever made. He is an extremely underrated hockey player in regards to his skill. He is more then just a mouth whose sole purpose is to agitate.

Edit: Guys you miss the point to Avery not always dropping the gloves, you can call him a baby or a coward if you want, but him not dropping gloves for every fight is what makes him so effective. He draws out the worst of everyone who wants a piece of him because they get so mad that he wont fight they do something even dumber and thusly that results in more penalty minutes.

Being an Islander fan i can't stand Avery. I think he's an a**hole who doesn't show any respect for the game. On the other hand I respected Barnaby when he was a Ranger and still do now.

Avery is a super-pest. Avery isn;t going to win a battle against guys like Boogaard, Brashear, Laraque while Barnaby doesn;t yap as much, but when push comes to shove, he's more than willing to drop them.

Sadly, Barnaby was another victim of the concussion rap and retired this past summer to help Ray run their construction company.

Man, I love both players! (And yes, that's serious.).

I'd have to say that Avery is probably more annoying. I mean, didn't 2/3 NHL players say that he's the most hated player in the league? I'm not aware of any polls like that when Barnaby played, but man... that's big, considering half the teams only see you twice every three years.

And I disagree with the poster that said Avery is like Paris Hilton... he definitely does have skill. Did you see him last year, in the playoff series vs. Atlanta? Did you see him last week, when he messed with Tucker, then got a goal and an assist on the Rangers' two goals? He does have skill and does fight to back up his mouth. Not always, but he does.

Barnaby was also great though. I love agitators... I love watching their stupid grin as they get in a fight, or seeing them yell to the crowd or bench... it's hilarious. How could anyone (any FAN) take that seriously? You know you'd love them if they were on your team, so stop hating.

Barnaby. That's the role of a pest, to be "just a pest" (even if they have other aspects to their game that they display).

Avery's more than a pest to me, he goes too far. He might be agitating, but it's because he's a douche that crosses the line. I think being a pest is an art in hockey, with the right mix of agitation, rule-bending, but still... you have SOME respect. And you keep your game ON the ice.

He may have been doing his job and managed to do it effectively ONCE against Jarkko Ruutu, but all season-long last season he wouldn't drop the gloves with Ruutu: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-cwecY_xWtY

Barnaby. You are right, Avery is more effective. I recently heard the NYR record with him in the line-up since he arrived there and it is phenomenal-can't remember exact numbers.
Also, Avery is alot more willing to drop the gloves and back up his mouth, whereas Barnaby was more apt to turtle.

Avery got all over Side Show Bob(Tucker) like bad rash. I would venture that he is the most effective pest right now.
The best ever. Ken Linesman with Philly and Esa Tikanen with the Oilers...but I digress.

Barnaby was still a hockey player, played with respect and wasn't afraid to drop the mits.

Avery is like Paris Hilton, famous for nothing
