I'll first say what made me ask this. One of my contacts asked a simple question about what we called Brazil nuts growing up. Immediatly I knew what she was getting at. All my life everyone in my family, and all my friends families called these little nuts by a term that most people consider a racist term. There is also a flower that grows where I live, that is also called by that name. I never said this name in a racist way, in fact I never really thought about it, however when I read the answers to her question, there were alot of people who instead of just answering the question, took the opportunity to jump all over the asker for using that term and wanted to point out that she shouldn't use that term around her kids. I really wanted to just say "GIVE ME A BREAK PEOPLE!" It isn't being said in a racist way, it was just a term that people where I live have been saying for as long as I can remember. For all I care, people can call vanilla cupcakes "cracker cakes" in their own home.

I mean honestly, every culture/race has their own terms for another culture/race. Whites are called names just like any other culture, and I personally don't get a bit offended by any of the terms that people call whites. Cracker, honkey, whatever. If they want to use those terms in the privacy of their own home, then I really don't care. If they use these terms in front of their kids, I don't care, as long as their kids don't say it to my face or to my kids. Just like I would never teach my kids that it was acceptable to use any racist term outside of our home. Why do people really care what goes on in someones private home?

I agree, they are trying to take away our freedom of speech in the privacy of our homes by this mass histeria of saying a 'racist remark'. It is part of our culture on a whole, its kind of like an unwritten rule. This is what I can say in my home, but I would never say thing outside of my home or to anyone else for that matter. People need to chose their battles more wisely, like that Santa Claus issue, now he has to say Ha Ha Ha, instead of Ho Ho Ho. Who in the world gets offended by Santa Claus saying Ho Ho Ho? That has been his catch phrase forever! See what I mean?
