Does that mean the Americans have stopped doing it from bases in the UK or is it just that they would not share their dirt with the UK government? There have always been ways for communications to be 'recorded' or monitored if certain words or expressions were used ... not something the government or telecomms operators like to shout about. Where you are at any time is easily established from your mobile phone transferring between base stations. With all the CCTV cameras and traffic cameras whose data can be used for other purposes, we must already be the most spied-on nation on earth. It is unacceptable. They will say they are not interested in your private life ... but we are already only a short step away from 'thought crime' - and even YA has its own form of censorship of legitimate subjects. This is more than just a slippery slope. It is an abuse of power and an insult to society.

Cell phones are radios. Every time you use one you broadcast to the world. Anyone with the right equipment can listen in on your conversation.
Section 314 of Public Law #107-108, signed into law on December 28, 2001 gives the President the authority to conduct warrantless electronic surveillance for up to 72 hours. That authority is identical to the one put down in Executive Order # 12949 signed by President William Jefferson Clinton on February 9, 1995.

Ahmed, do you live in the U.S.? If you don't live in a western country, then you can just about bet that your government is watching! In the U.S., they are not supposed to be watching us but, how would we know for sure? I am opposed to the idea of our government watching us, freedom of speech, you know. If they are, they certainly know where we stand on the status quo!

Nancy Peloser sure was worried, that's why she went to Syria to meet with Putin and get her instructions.
