You are basically talking about four things: resources, money, politics and unity. These are the four dragons that can make or break a country.
1) Resources: The United States had better get going on its recycling and use of fuel. There are many cars available that will support 40-80 mpg. This technology is available in other countries. Why not the US? Which brings us into...
2) Money: Bush really set things up for himself and his buddies to make a heck of a lot of money by increasing gasoline prices. None of them want the gas-saving vehicles that are available in other countries here. They would lose their fortunes. Which leads us into...
3) Politics. The next political leader should not have an agenda to use American taxpayer money and live to fuel his daddy's war. Keep in mind, also, that whenever there is a crisis in the world, the United States is often called in to fix it.
Which leads us into...
4) Unity. All great empires have fallen due to the lack of unity within. A house divided cannot stand. All Americans know this, and they will not turn on each other. This is why America will stay strong for quite a while yet.
China will take over, but it will not be for anytime soon. There are too many problems there. They are very much distrusted by the other Asian countries- American sentiment is small potatoes next to the negative feelings that Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries have against China. They don't play happily in the sandbox in the Pacific Rim.
So no, America will not always be a superpower. Like ancient Rome, it will have its end, but not so soon. The next war will be a financial one, not one based on bombs.
P.S. My family comes from Italy, and one American said to me, "When I visited Rome, I felt that Julius Caesar was still in charge."
Some things never change.

I don't think we will be a "superpower" for too much longer. We really haven't been for that long if you think about the history of civilization. Generally, the downfall is the "fault" of the country or empire which held the title. They became selfish, greedy, etc. - sometimes, it was just the leaders; other times, it was the leaders and a fair portion of the population.
Bush continues to say he wants "democracy" and "freedom" everywhere - he could start here and take away that Patriot Act for starters - but, the thing is, if China and India do the same things that the US did years earlier, they could become superpowers relatively quickly. There is no way, no reason why the US is the police force of the world - like we're the ones doing the "right thing." And I don't mean most of the people. It seems to me that regular Americans are the same (well, with some cultural differences that don't ultimately change the core person) as regular Japanese people who are the same as people from Cuba, from Costa Rica, from India, from Kenya. ALL of us give too much power and control to a very small group who pretend they have our best interests in mind but don't.
I can't think of an ethical leader. Oh, probably the Dalai Lama but I don't know him personally so I can't say with 100% assuredness. (But it's likely he's the most ethical leader in the world. And the Chinese kicked him out; what does that say?!)
On another level, who doesn't care about Canada? They seem very nice. And who's to say what the quality of life is for the average Chinese person? That's for them to say. Do you know when Americans had the highest "quality of life" according to the actual people? In the mid 1950s. Most people only had one car, a small house, a small black and white TV (maybe they had that, maybe not.) Probably now, most of us would say that sounds horrible. However, those Americans rated their happiness higher than we do now.
One final thing - the Chinese may continue to call themselves Communist (and they do seem to have embraced the worst parts of Communism while rejecting the positives) but capitalism is going strong among a quickly growing minority. (Who will soon be hiring American au pair girls to watch their child....)

Wow, um, people like you make me ashamed to be American.
Of COURSE we will NOT always be a superpower! Look at history--no regime has EVER remained consistent, and the USA is only 200 years old--a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things.
No wonder people think we Americans are arrogant if we have people like you speaking for us.

I don't think we will be a superpower forever. No country ever stayed in that position forever and we aren't the exception (Rome, France, Spain, British, Germans, Russians, etc.)
We will probably become just another retired superpower like most of Europe is now, which isn't a bad thing btw. Most of those countries are doing pretty good, just out of the limelight.

The way I define super power there is might and moral authority. If there is only might a country could be a super menace.
What's wrong with Canada? They have moral authority. They paid the man the US kidnapped and sent to Syria (an axis of evil country) for torture and interrogation. The US did not even admit they did anything wrong kidnapping him from JFK airport.

Ruby girl ...welcome to the reality of the world.
Chin up girl, it isn't the end of the world you know. As a matter of fact your poor country could use a respite and quite frankly it needs to withdraw from the global system. The trillions you people spend annually on your war machine is abominable!!
If and when China overtakes the states in this arena it will be a slow and drawn out process and it will be a battle of attrition. China with a population of over a billion will undoubtedly win.
The states just hasn't got the population to go up against China or East India. Both those nations have a population base of over a billion. You're outnumbered!!. Sorry.

Don't worry if that does happen (it actually probably will) global warming will screw them over.
I'd be surprised if there is no coup by then...OMG ARE YOU DISSING CANADA? That's fine with me, though you have to love their bacon.
What can we do as Americans? Other than nuke them (or *cough* stop global warming *cough* not much could stop them
Note: China is at a MASSIVE rate of growth in population and economy.
Edit: Why do you care so much about it? Just wondering...
