I think it is fine to meet someone in person that you first made contact with online as long as you use common sense and make sure those first few meetings are in public places. It can actually turn out better then just meeting someone in a bar or something. When you meet online, you start out by talking via instant messenger or emailing each other, and then progressing to talking on the phone and then deciding if you want to take it to the next level and meet in person. Most of the people who are on yahoo to play games for example are just ordinary people that are just passing time and if they happen to meet another person who shares that interest, who knows what other interests they may have in common.
You do have to use some common sense as you don't know if the person you are chatting with is actually who they say they are but that could also be true no matter where else you may have met.
I have personally met a few people in person that I first met online and they are fine people that I am glad to know.
The internet has just made the world smaller and it's here to stay so you may as well get used to it and go with the flow. Good luck to you.

Watch your back, Mermaid, I bet they must be together plotting some kind of attack on you! At the least, your whole life's savings are being transferred to a Swiss account while they steal your identity, fake your death and receive huge insurance fraud $$. Probably on their way to Jamaica at this very moment!

OMG, people are actually decent!!! Just so you don't think this is place you really think it is---I met a guy online. We went out once and he was too weird for me. I came home one night and he was sitting on my lounge chair watching tv. The guy broke out my back window and broke in. He was crazy. I told him to get out and he said, "Aren't you going to at least offer me a beer or a drink?"
I couldn't figure out how this freak got my address...stupid me gave him my home phone number and he did a reverse search.
But, yeah this is such a really disturbing place. Two of my brothers met their wives on match.com and have been married for 5+ years each. One child who is 6 is a pc pro, I think it was that internet match---
Shocking.
Good question. Enjoyed your creative sarcasm.

I've met two very nice men on the Personal's sites. I first met them at a public place before I went out with them. I am still alive and not been hurt.

I know some people that met on the internet and it worked out just fine with them, but you really do have to be very careful. There are some real sick-o's out there.

Well, I've already felt somewhat disturbed by it. However, after I found this space with Au.Answers.Yahoo, my conception of the net has gotten better each day. Here I can use my English and then I can enjoy myself.

It's Depressing but people never learned from others mistakes and make their own mistakes not really wanting to be the best lesson of their life passages.
Internet are the best tools ever for human race only when it use for all good thing/purposes.
History repeats itself and keep making his story.!

Whoa... this is even more sinister and pervasive than you think!
I met one of your contacts in real life too... and turns out he wasn't a knife-wielding maniac OR a criminally deranged pervert!
There goes my plan for getting rich selling the movie rights. *sigh*

I met a man from another country that I met on the internet. He lived with me for a while. He didn't rape or murder me but I did threaten to chop him up and keep him in a box under my bed. :D

I agree. I don't do internet dating. It's for people who don't get off the computer and talk to no one in the real world
