It started around 1919-1921 with the Kaluza-Klein model. The math became easier if you did it in 5 dimensions instead of 4. Do some reading to get more detail and more history.

Someone noticed that equations that relate to vibrating strings could be expanded to explain other properties of physics. The mathematics are way over my head so I don't know what he specifically saw.
