I'm a male teacher... I teach 4th grade. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's seen as a "female" job to "take care of" kids is what I see. Really... I don't care what people think. In my building, I'm the only male teacher to be in grades K-5 and a lot of the kids... ones I don't even know... look up to me. But a lot of them also don't have male role models in their life, so I am that guy for them. It's rewarding for me. Otherwise... teachers get paid crap. For such an important job (because you can't do ANYTHING without an education), the pay is extremely low... and there is a TON of work. You have to really like it to do it.

There was only one in my elementary school and very few in my middle and high schools when I was in school in the 1950's and 60s. I don't think the situation could have gotten much worse - it has always been a female-dominated profession. To make matters worse, fewer men than women are graduating from high school, fewer are going on to college, and fewer are graduating from college these days, so we can expect to see fewer men in any jobs which require an education in the future.
