Mechanical wave-a wave that requires a medium through which to transmit energy

transverse wave-A wave in which the vibration is moving in a direction perpendicular as that in which the wave is traveling

longitudinal wave-A seismic body wave in which particles oscillate along lines in the direction in which the wave travels

rarefaction-The part of a longitudinal wave which is stretched out, where as a compression is the part which is pushed together

surface wave-One of a series of seismic waves that transmits energy from an earthquake's epicenter along the Earth's surface

amplitude- the maximum displacement of a periodic wave

hertz-A unit of measurement for pitch that describes the number of cycles per second in a sound vibration

angle of incidence-the angle between a ray of light incident on a surface and a line drawn normal to the surface

angle of reflection-A ray of light reflected from a surface forms an angle with an imaginary line drawn at right angles to the surface

refraction-he bending of light as it passes from one medium to another

diffraction-The bending of light around objects, such as cloud and fog droplets, producing fringes of light and dark or colored bands

interference-The ability of two or more waves to interact in such a way that they either reinforce or cancel each other

constructive interference-Interference that occurs when waves occupying the same space combine to form a single stronger wave

destructive interference-The cancellation of one wave by another wave that is completely out of phase with the first

standing wave-Continual waves which remain in one place

node antinode-The point on a wave of greatest displacement

resonance-This is the vibration frequency of a rotating or moving object

seismic wave-Wave of energy that travels through the Earth as a result of seismic activity

primary wave-an earthquake wave traveling through solids faster than the secondary wave, and causing rocks to vibrate parallel witht he wave

secondary wave-n earthquake wave in which rock particles vibrate at right angles to the direction of travel

You wouldn't be asked to do this unless you were expected to understand the concepts. Each term for which you can't construct a sentence is a clue about an area you need to learn or review.
