I don't know of any strange events off the top of my head. But some of the important events are as follows:
The "Black Plague", bubonic plague, at one time wiped out, killed approximately 1/3 of Europes entire population.
The monasteries preserved much of the knowledge of the past, and when things finally begin to settle down, this resource became available to the populace at large. Had this not happened, heaven only knows where human society would be nowadays.
Architecture as an art and science endured, and we have the great, magnificent cathedrals to marvel at, and enjoy.
The Catholic Church became established throughout the continent, and though many would argue its value, it did provide a semblance of stability and coherence to an otherwise very turbulent and chaotic era.
The spread of Islam was ultimately stopped, both in the east and west; thus permitting the further evolution and development of what we know today as western civilization.
And that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Strange events (these are all English)--
William the Conqueror died after injuring his stomach on his saddle pommel. His body was so bloated that it burst when they tried to squeeze it into a too small coffin.
William Rufus died a mysterious death by arrow in the new Forest, which some think may have been in a pagan ritual.
King John imprisoned a noblewoman called Maude de Braose with her son in either Windsor or Corfe castles. He didn't give them any food, and Maud ending up eating her son's face.
Edward II was deposed and killed horribly by having a hot poker put up his rear. This was thought to be an 'amusing' death as he was gay.

During the middle ages, their government was called feudalism (ranked in classes) the king came first, followed by nobles(also called vassals or lords) then the knights, and last the peasants or serfs. the peasants worked for their protection from attacks. Also they had the growth of humanism. During that time their was an increase in interest of education and art. Some diseases also spread through the times. Such as the Bubonic Plague (also known as Black Death) The Hundred Years' War also occured between England and France. Lastly as a result of major droughts a shortage of food resulted in a famine.
