I would say Richmond is better. Tampa is more big city. I agree with asdfgh. Tampa is a party area. The Hurricane thing is a problem too. If you want a beach and family area Virginia Beach is REALLY nice and family oriented.

I commented on your last post, but I have thought of more things to say about Richmond.

If you drive 2 hours to the west you will run into the Appalachian Mountains, locally called the Blue Ridge Mountains, but are also known by other names. Shenandoah Valley is a beautiful place, and if you end up there, I suggest taking a drive on Skyline Drive.

Back in Richmond, if you travel 2 hours to the east you will run into Virginia Beach. If you're not fond of the beach, Virginia also has many historical locations in it's tidewater region. Places including, but not limited to: Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg. Also in the tidewater region you will find Norfolk, VA - home of the infamous naval base. If I'm not mistaken, it is the biggest one in the U.S. (I could be wrong). If your family ever takes a cruise, the convenience of the cruises that leave from Norfolk is especially great. You don't even have to pay for your transportation to the port of call (which is often a complain from cruise-goers).

Keep in mind that 2 hours to the north of Richmond you will find Washington, D.C.- always a nice place to weekend to. On the way you may detour to old plantation homes, some belonging to past presidents. George Washington's Mount Vernon is a very short drive from Richmond, as well as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and James Madison's Montpieler. Other popular plantations in the area can be found along the James River. One of the popular ones that comes to mind is James Dean's home. There are boat tours that can take you along the river specifically to view these amazing homes.

If you're looking for fun, about a 30 minute drive north of Richmond to Doswell, VA will land you at Paramounts Kings Dominion. They have their own water park as well as a regular theme park with roller coasters and the like. In Williamsburg you can visit Busch Garden's and/or Water Country USA. While it's easy to visit Kings Dominion in one day, you might want to leave a couple days for visiting Busch Gardens/Water Country (they are just a few miles apart).

ECK!!! I have lived in Tampa, Fl since 1979. I am appalled at the answers from people who have not ever lived here.

First Tampa is very rural . Tampa proper is a very small part of the Tampa Bay area. There are suburbs that are very nice with civic clubs for every persons interest.

Over the years the area has grown more. there are many subdivisions that are perfect for young families to start in and grow with them. Currently the housing market is struggling. The prices of houses has gotten far too expensive for the average family. Mortgage foreclosure is at all time highs in Tampa and surrounding area.

The Tampa area is very recreational minded with things to do and see all the time. We have culture, plays, malls, Ybor city and plenty of history to visit.

Tampa Area is also very multi-racial with a little bit of different things for every one.

Hurricane season is from June 1st to November 30th. And the season of 2007 despite predictions of higher than normal hurricanes......Not one approached the Area. In fact since I have lived here there has never been a direct hit on Tampa.

Since I have lived here so long I love Tampa...especially the winters.

Hope you come here to live!!!

I've never been to Tampa, been to Orlando and of course, Walt Disney World. I would stay in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The capital of Virginia, Richmond. But, take a visit and check it out for yourself, before you make any decision, do some research on line and check it out for yourself.

Tampa is great, but this planet needs more humans like a drowning man needs a glass of water.
