Outperforms is relative. If you take a look at the high end, new Macs, you will see they outperform all similarly priced home computers when peforming Photoshop intense tasks and when rendering video. I've got a few computers and my newest one outperforms my oldest as does anything made in the last five years. Technology races ahead so if the school has two year old computers, they are already out of date. The idea is not to do everything at the fastest possible speed but to learn as much as you can that can be useful in your future. Take a look at the trends in computers to see where things are going. The first link below shows operating system trends. For Windows, you must add XP and Vista together. For Mac, you add Mac OS and MacIntel together. The second link is hardware sales trend in the U.S. (We have to ignore world-wide sales since Microsoft looks the other way when Windows is pirated and sold for one dollar on every street corner. Almost no one in China will buy a Mac since they can't get the software for next to nothing like they can Windows.)
Who will buy the graphics software? If the school, go with what they offer because you can get a two year old Mac that will work just fine and you'll be using the same software as the teacher and fellow students. If you finish school and go out to get a job in advertising, you will find that more than half the ad firms use a Mac server and Mac workstations so it would be good to be on track with that. Pro photography studios are even more inclined towards Macs; about 75 percent. In addition, you will enhance your resume with full Mac ability and that can only increase your chances of getting the job you want.
My first computer use was with Windows. Later, when I first started to use a Mac, it seemed a bit odd but I finally saw the advantages. In fact, if you sit down and use a Mac for about 2 hours, you will see it is very easy to learn. I use a Windows XP box in my office but I wouldn't if they didn't provide it. It takes up too much of my time removing viruses and defragging. I use a Mac at home for lots of video and photo editing.
On the other hand, if you will buy the software, why not save money and get Windows versions so you don't have to buy a second comnputer? Makes financial sense if money is a big question. But.. still, the resume is the most important thing. What do you want to have when you finish this study? A job, I think. That's the meat of the matter.

You should be the 1st one to be able to tell.
MAC machines are great with graphics, desktop publishing and any advanced technology goodies with a great processor.
Then again, PC machines are so widely varied it's almost impossible to figure out which components will work best with each other and then have to think of the processing unit also.
MAC is so much more geared to education and high end technology and they work great.
PCs are also geared good but me thinks more towards the graphics and gaming crowd, although office technology is great.

u answerd the question ur self, its a PC, u said u built one, so get PC's and build them to what u need, but if its like actually physicaly building it, its gonna take to much time... Personaly i think you should get MAC's. they have built up a name for them selfs and are keeping the name, so they are very reliable. I have a mac now and its just amazing, ive used it to publish my photos, used adobe on it, made absoulutly amazing sports videos on it if i may say so myself! they are wicked easy to use, i havent touched my manuel once. plus, a lot of school teachers have used macs, and my high school for the past 6 years have been brought up on macs, so everyone knows how to use them well. long story short, get a mac and u'll be happy!

PC's are so much more reliable plus if your doing graphics, you probably need photoshop which is so much easier on PC, dont give into the Mac fad, they have never been reliable for me
