It really depends if the details reveal important information or if they have to do with the story. Too much description is gets dull and tedious to read through. Describe what is important and and do it sparingly. This makes the few descriptions used much better. Writers differ in their styles and there really is no specific amount of description needed to be considered a good writer.

Detail is definitely in the top 5 of most important things to do when you write. Without detail, your story will be boring and life-less. You have to make sure you add detail to your writing or no one will want to read it. Put as much detail as you can, but don't stress it too much.
Ex:
BORING- The house was on the hill.
WITH DETAIL AND MORE EXCITING-The miniature yellow house stood at the peak of the hill.
See how it is much better? If you would have used the boring one... I would have no idea what the house looked like and it would just be plain BORING.
So make sure you add LOTS of detail :]
Hope this helps and good luck!

Detailed descriptions should be used to create vivid imagery. I'm very much a fan of the "show, don't tell" technique when it comes to writing. I'm a creative non fiction writer, so I just LOVE observation.
You need to find your own style and stick with it. Get other people to read your work. If it's too much detail they will tell you.

It depends on your audience and what you are trying to communicate. Typically, if you are trying to communicate factual information, more detial is appropriate. If you are trying to communicate a specific experience or feeling or picture, more detail is appropriate. If you want the reader to be free to read their own interpretation into what you write, use less detail. Analyze the work of writers you consider good and see how much detail they use. For example, Harry Potter books include a lot of detail.
Good luck.

It depends on three elements.
What your writing.
Is the detail very important?
And if so, how much do you actually need?
Different writing, differen descriptions for details. So it depends. If the topic is important enough, it's sometimes crucial to put a lot of detail into the story, if not, if it's very little, you try not to put as much detail.

to no longer the factor the place the reader gets bored. I hate over-descriptive writing. once I clarify a characters outfits--those ever so rarely situations--I make it straight forward. Levi's, black boots, and a few ordinary colored T shirt. it is it. I never bypass into exact on whether or no longer it suits their physique form, if it hangs on them, clashes with the floor tone, and blah blah blah. I do write approximately their strikes and hair lots nevertheless. i admire hair.
