You aren't supposed to wear nail polish. When I became a CNA it was a strict rule.
I found of list of rules online for nail polish:
Studies have demonstrated that chipped nail polish may support the growth of organisms on the fingernails.
While no studies have demonstrated a relationship between freshly applied nail polish and infection,[1] there is concern that individuals with fresh manicures may be hesitant to perform rigorous hand hygiene in an effort to protect their nails. Compromises in hand hygiene technique may then lead to transmission of infection.
If nail polish is worn, it should not be worn for more than 4 days. At the end of 4 days, nail polish should be removed and freshly reapplied.
Individuals who choose to wear nail polish should be guided by their surgical conscience, which requires a combination of clinical experience, judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to question a practice when one believes it is not the right thing to do.

"Custard Pie's" answer is dead on and correct. Just as an additional thought, as a potential patient, dark polish or any opaque color would concern me because I couldn't see whether a nurse's fingernails were clean. Polish can hide a lot of sins under the nail.
Please save polish for special occasions and remove it for the well being of your patients.

It is not that you are not allowed to wear nail polish, but if you do have nail polish on the patients can't see that your nails are clean and neither can you. You may know they are, but your patients don't know that for sure.
It is just a hygeine thing, that is all.

Definitely wouldn't advise wearing nail polish at all, least of all dark colours. It's very important your hands are - and are seen to be - as clean and clear as possible.

No, nail polish is not recommended.
and i know for a fact that acrylic nails are STRICTLY PROHIBITED because of the risks of fungus/infection.
