I have been horse- shopping, and one of the prospective horses is claimed to be "hot on trails." What does this mean? It also said that he is more comfortable with another horse on trails. Does that have anything to do with it?

A 'hot' horse is very spirited and can be hard to handle. If you want to trail ride and you aren't a very experienced rider, I'd pass on this horse.

My very first horse was a beautiful drop-dead-gorgeous saddlebred! I loved him dearly, but after 3 years and getting thrown 13 times - I finally realized that he wasn't the right horse for me. He was "hot on trails" - very prancy and didn't want to be away from other horses. It broke my heart to sell him - but I knew it was just a matter of time before more than my heart would be broken. I spent a year researching what would be the perfect trail horse and I came up with Tennessee Walking horses. I now own 2 and have had them for 6 years. They are kind, affectionate, loving, smart. My husband used to describe my first horse as being like a thermometer - the temperature would go up and up and up til he exploded!!! My TWH's may get spooked, but all they do is lift their head up and stand there, maybe get alittle prancy once and a while - but they don't get more and more excited, they calm down right away. Get a Tennessee Walker - they're the greatest.

If the seller says he's "hot on trails" it's a serious red flag. Sellers don't disclose minor faults. This seller is telling you one of two things: the horse will bolt (run away) in the open, or jig, dance, and make you wish you'd never met him; or he requires a rider with more skill than the seller believes you have.
If you're experienced, take the horse home on 2-week trial. If the seller won't let you do that, keep shopping.

I agree with luvrats...a "hot" horse is not fun to ride on the trails. Trails should be un and relaxing not trying to slow him down or worrying that he''' freak at a ...butterfly. Horses are herd animals so of course they like to be around each other...some could care less if you seperate them from the bunch but others would totally freak out mentally and physically. (not a fun experience)
