my fiance and I are getting married next year and trust me, I dont think we'll be having kids for 4 or 5 more years. but I was just wondering - my fiance suffers from random on and off depression. how likely is it that would be passed on when we have children?

Very likely... but since you know about it you can have an eye out for it in your children

Tough question.

What exactly is he depressed about? My believe and its just my opinion that depression is just anger focused inward if that makes any sense. Is you're husband on any meds? Seeing a therapist? I know my father and his brother suffered some depression, especially my uncle but he turned out pretty good. He was a professor at a major University in New Mexico and my Dad is an awesome person all around. I suffered a little as a teenager but I managed to get through it and become a stronger person because of it. I dunno. Some people use the "crutch" of a label such as "depression". I refused to label myself as such. So, technically you're question was.. will it be passed down? Yes. But ask yourself this before you have children. How is you're husband handeling his own depression? This will give you a good inclination of how he will be able to help raise a child. Good luck to the both of you :)

well there's obviously a chance but SO MANY people have bouts of depression so don't let that worry you too much. It's good that you are thinking about it now and you know that there is a chance

When you do have kids keep your eyes open for signs. Better yet, start EARLY teaching them healthy coping mechanisms when they are upset. Be attentive if you see that maybe they are upset.

May I suggest St. Johns Wort for your husband...assuming he's not on any prescribed meds...it works very well for some.

Almost everyone will suffer from depression from time ti time. When it lasts longer than 2 weeks without anything (major tragedy) to cause it, then it is worth worrying about. Also, men do have low points that are different than women, it is their reaction to stress, whereas women tend to become high strung. This type of mild moodiness isn't something to be concerned about with your children.

It can be passed on. I say that because it can be a genetic thing. Don't let that stop you from having children because they could just as easily get your genes. For future reference you may have better luck if you post this kind of question in the health section.

Speaking as a psychotherapist and marriage counselor, mental illness often runs in families.

You're not doing your marriage chances any favors by marring a depressed person. A respectful person would sort that out before asking you to marry him.
What depression does to emotions, makes it contagious to partners; let alone offspring.

I don't think likely at all. There was probably something that happended to him when he was little if he remembers it or not and that's what makes him depressed. As long as you treat your kids with love and care they shouldn't have any depression. But that's my beliefs.

well it can be passed on, but it also will have to do with what kind of depression it is. Some can be depressed just cause they want to be, but their are chemical depressions too and mental.
