that a person who extends a helping hand to others and does it for free is an open, loving, compassionate person or someone with a secret agenda? I think such a person is loving, compassionate, open and a gift to all who encounter them.

It is often difficult for some people to accept help, and because of their mistrust they wonder if someone has a secret agenda, that they're really out for something. There is such joy in giving and helping others!

I agree with you, I like to be nice and help people when I can, because I've been unlucky enough to have needed help but lucky enough to encounter some of the kind, compassionate folks you describe, so now things are getting a little better for me, I take the example of the people who have been there for me and am striving to be like the good guys!.

Sadly too many people have had bad experiences with unscrupulous people to trust there are truly nice, helpful people in the world.

Yes they can be considered a compassionate, loving and open person.
If it seems unwarrented or over the top, then that would probably be someone with a hidden agenda.
Generally if it's the loving, compassionate person they can be taken for granted and given a rough ride.
I speak from experience, sometimes it's not always good being so nice.

Well, as a home support worker. I help others but it is my job for pay. Sometimes I do extra things for my clients though for free such as bring them movies to watch or some goodies I've baked or vegetables from my garden. I like going above and beyond my job because I know they really appreciate it. I have no secret agenda.

Anyone who helps others is a loving, compassionate person. It they have an agenda it will always come out. I still believe that most people are good. Maybe naive, but I'm still convinced.

I know I have an agenda when I'm helping someone and that is to show my son to be compassionate and helpful, but on the other hand, don't let anyone take advantage of your kindness.

When I extend a helping hand I do it because I care about others. It is done out of love and compassion, I think most people are this way. You may have some who do it hoping to gain something or who just want recognition and will brag about it, but that's the minority.

Well, I know that there are some people out there that use goodness to disguise evil to take advantage of people. Hopefully most of the people who normally extend a helping hand to others is doing from their heart. I agree with you that it is a good way to be. We need more people like that in this world. Doing something for nothing.

I so enjoy giving, caring, helping and I am so unselfish. If I have something that someone ( especially my children or grandchildren say they like, in many cases, I'll give it to them.) Unfortunately, we can't always trust everyone. I'm certain that those of you here who stated that you believe people are to be trusted really mean that and have probably not had many bad experiences and that is wonderful. I have
had my kindness taken advantage of several times in my life so I am very cautious. I've also seen, from working in the medical field and for the state government, how many older people get taken advantage of.....many times by their own family. So sad but true....

Always give without expecting anything in return.

People who find it hard to accept sometimes it is pride, and other times they are genuinely concerned that people are expecting something in return, and are just cautious.

If this happens with me, I usually just leave a parcel at the front door, or a little money in an envelope with a card in it. That way, they don't know who did it, but at least it helps them.

I agree with you. Though there are those with a secret agenda. Born manipulators. Sadly it is usually too far down the road when you realize that side of them.
the older people get the less likely they are to waste their own or your time with secret agendas.
