"Why, all of a sudden, in a world where we are told that we are hated and we have to rebuild or image, how come pro-American conservative leaders are being elected in all these democracies, like France, like Germany, and a number of other places?"

Here’s what Frances leader had to say about us

SARKOZY (via translator): To the millions of men and women who came from every country in the world and who, with their own hands, their intelligence, and their hearts, built the greatest nation in the world, America did not say, "Come, and everything will be given to you." Rather, she said, "Come, and the only limits to what you will be able to achieve will be those of your own courage, your boldness, and your talent."

SARKOZY (via translator): The America that we love throughout the world embodies this extraordinary ability to grant each and every person a second chance, another chance -- because, in America, failure is never the last word. There is always another chance. Here, in your country, on this soil, both the humblest and the most illustrious citizens alike know that nothing is owed to them and that everything has to be earned. That is what constitutes the moral value of America.

SARKOZY: America liberated us, and this is an eternal debt we owe America.

SARKOZY: Every time, whenever an American soldier falls somewhere in the world, I think of what the American army did for France. I think of them, and I am sad as one is saddened to lose a member of one's family.

SARKOZY (via translator): We need France to be stronger. I am determined to carry through with the reforms that my country has put off for all too long. I will not turn back. I will implement all of them because France has turned back for all too long. I have come to present to you today a France that comes out to meet America, to renew the covenant of friendship and alliance that Washington and Lafayette sealed in Yorktown. Together let us be true to their memories. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I say this to you on behalf of the French people: "Long live the United States of America! Long live France! Long live French-American friendship!"

France and America have an on/off love affair. Americans remember that France helped us during The Revolutionary War to achieve our independence. The French are grateful for our intervention in World War 1 and World War II-paricularly World War II.
As for the embrace of American style Conservatism, its not Bush but rather an embrace of pragmatism, market forces and a rejection of the paternal or maternal State. Its an admiration of our Constitution and our liberties.

Sarkozy is just toadying up to the US now Britain is distancing itself. France has always believed that the UK has not fully commited to the European superstate (with France at its head, of course) because of its relationship with America which enables it to play both sides of the field and thus have the strongest economy in Europe.
This is something France now wants and as soon as it gets it the US will be dropped like a hot coal.

Liberalism and conservatism are cycles. People try new things, realize that most of the new things are stupid and revert back to a conservative mindset. It's the natural flow of progress. The people who want no change or the people who want all the changes are the ones to watch out for. In Europe, they had a huge socialism bent for some time. Now, they're realizing it was a stupid idea, so they're reverting in some key ways. Some things (like the Euro currency) will stay, while other really foolish things will depart.

It did not change all of a sudden.

Chirac, who preceded Sarkozy, is a conservative.

In Germany, Andrea Merkel, a moderate conservative, succeeded a moderate left government that wore out its welcome. Merkel heads a coalition government; her party won the election, but not by a sufficiently large margin to allow it to govern on its own.

Despite what Rush and his ilk have to say, Europe tends to have a mix of moderate left and moderate right politicians; they also have a few nutjobs at each extreme.

The far-left in the US wants everyone to believe that America is universally hated, but that's just not true. The fact that former liberal bastions such as France and Germany have rejected the far left philosophy, is evidence that Liberalism is losing it's grasp, and is out of touch with how real people think and how they want to live their lives.
Viva Sarkozy!

Well it isn't because of their pro-Americanism. They were largely elected on a promise of economic-reforms to bring down high unemployment.
