I finally got desperate and went with function over looks. I use a small laundry basket (square is most space efficient). This can keep all the chips, cereals, and crackers contained, even if they don't want to stand up nicely...particularly the case for things in their original bag or a ziplock bag. I ended up using it for anything in a box, too. Since I am kind of? trying to watch the weight, I can put all my "bad idea" foods at a less easy reach, hidden away all together in a base cabinet in the kitchen...but you could store them in a very handy place, such as on the pantry floor, or on top of the fridge. Smaller square baskets are also great for different varieties of pasta, rice, and instant sides like ramen, mac and cheese, etc.

When my kids were younger, they would open chips and cookies up and leave open to go stale. So, I got lots of baggies and bagged them up.

you can use ziplock bags to insure freshness, then keep them up in the cabinet until ready for use.

it really depends on the snack.
If it's cold then a fridge.
