I have an internal medicine doctor for all my organs, but I go to an ob-gyn for a PAP smear and pelvic exam annually. I think my internal med MD would be able to perform the PAP, but I'd rather have someone who does them all the time, and who can do them correctly, than go to someone who may only do one or two a year. Just like I go to an eye doctor if I have an eye problem. General docs are good for managing your overall health, but somethings are best left to experts.

The gynecologist will do the pap smear. A Pap smear is a test your doctor does to check for signs of cancer of the cervix. The cervix is part of your uterus (womb). During a Pap smear, your doctor takes a sample of cells from your cervix to be tested.

To take the sample, your doctor will put a special instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This helps open your vagina so the sample can be taken. Your doctor will gently clean your cervix with a cotton swab and then collect a sample of cells with a small brush, a tiny spatula or a cotton swab. This sample is put on a glass slide and sent to a lab to be checked.

The general doctor will exam your body to check your blood pressure, weight, ear, mouth, check your tummy, breast, and much more.

I usually goes both doctor whenever I goes.

until about a year ago, I only went to my OB/GYN. Then my brother, 1 year shy from getting his med degree yelled at me. He said, what happens if you break your arm, get a bad cold? Your OB/GYN is not capable of handling stuff like that and going to an emergency room is too expensive. I got to this doctor only for women's health issues including my annual exam, birth control needs and pap smear. That's it. though my general doctor could do them if I had to.

A general pracitioner is the best bet for normal health. They will also be able to asses your general health and find out where you stand on all sorts of medical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, cholestorol, etc.

I actually had to go to mine last year when I got very sick with some cold that was going around.

You may not ever use them, but they will be there for you when you need them. I would definately recommend one.

I just have a general doctor. But, she checks everything out and gives me my pap smear. She is very knowledgeable about the femal anatomy too. She is wonderful. it all depends on who you find.

I have both a general doctor and a gynecologist. I feel more comfortable going to a specialist rather than one who has a more broad knowledge base.

Both. With the gyno, better to have the doctor who specializes in that kind of stuff.
