Yep. It's not that the crime of staying in the country illegally is all that terrible, individually, it's that it's so widespread. 12-20 million or more illegals. By contrast, islamist terrorism is a much more terrible crime, but as it is rarely carried out successfully (2 such attacks on American soil in the last 20 years), it's really not much of a /threat/ to our society.
Going through the formalities of deportation for all of them would certainly be impractical - further evidence that we are well into the crisis stage of the problem - but, targetting enforcement against employers to reduce the incentive to immigrate illegally would certainly go a long way towards reducing that number. As would eliminating 'rewards' for illegal residency, such as constant attempts to pass Amnesty, provision of social services to illegals, sanctuary cities, and the like.
The current thing that the anti-illegal types are pushing in Congress, the SAVE act, /does/ go after employers, requiring them to document the eligibility of thier employees to work.

If you think "illegal" immigration is not a threat, research about the program that Hugo Chavez has in Venezuela, where Spanish lessons are given to Middle Easterners *for free*. When you add the Spanish lessons, the physical similarities between Middle East people and Hispanics, and, our open borders in the South, you get a recipe for disaster!!

It is a very good point, politicians tart up issues as you so elegantly put it so as to make slight policy differences on minor issues so as you can differentiate between the parties, it becomes harder nowadays.
Parties have such similar policies that they have to tart up issues so as to make it look like they're doing something rather than just striving for power when they dont really want a dramatic change rather the feel of millions of peoples lives revolving around them.
Politicians from today dont want change, they want power.

It's an unfair threat to my wallet. Isn't that enough? Our country is in danger of financial ruin because too many people who don't PAY INTO THE SYSTEM are benefiting from the SYSTEM.
Get an education, you say? Hell, illegal immigrants get breaks on their tuition that I don't get.
Who is going to round them up, you ask? THE BORDER PATROL, THAT'S WHO. They get paid to round the illegals up and they do so every day. That's tax money well spent, as opposed to tax money (and S.S.I.) spent on the education of the chilren of illegals who don't pay property taxes since they DON'T OWN ANY PROPERTY, and medical care for illegals when I DON'T EVEN HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE MYSELF. Why don't I have health insurance? BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY SEEING MY PAYCHECKS WITHHELD SO THAT MY TAX MONEY CAN HELP ILLEGALS WHO DON'T PAY INTO THE SYSTEM.

The United States is in more potential danger from people slipping across the border than from Iraq under Saddam.

Yes, it is a huge threat. Remember, the terrorists who leveled the Twin Towers entered the US illegally. What do you suggest? Opening the borders to just everyone who wants to come, with no system to screen them? BAD IDEA.

Yes....because the liberals will give them drivers licenses and make them vote democrat. Then use those votes to elect idiots like Clinton. She will in turn force the liberal religion on the rest of America. Not caring that the majority of America doesn't want their immoral lifestyle forced on us. They will do this because it is the only way they could possibly get elected, the same way she gets her campaign donations.....illegally.

Illegal immigration kills more Americans than Iraq does. Our politicians know it but the general public does not.

It also costs more than Iraq. Taxes will have to be raised since Democrat policitians plan on spending $2.5 TRILLION U.S. tax dollars on their plan to give voting rights to illegal immigrants. Democrats are planning on using taxpayers money to buy votes to keep themselves in power.
