The problem with a question like this is that it's based on an 'either or' premise. Life is not about 'either or'.
Life is one big grey area. The problem is that people are always trying to force 'either or' on life and it just doesn't fit. Life is about balance.
To answer your question, there are times when it is wise to do one or the other, but mostly life requires a mixture of the two. And it is in that area that most people meet failure because they fail to recognize that the situation is not 'either or'.

For me to go with the flow puts me on a wide, a very wide highway of people all going to the same place that leads to nowhere.
So I stand for "the way" I've adopted and I have to say "the way" is a narrow path that seems to be treacherous sometimes and it has a lot of thorns, rocks and craggy edges on it, it has a very small gate but very few go through it. When I get there I know that the door will easily open and on the other side will be 'beyond my imagination'. I'm not going with the flow. I'm sticking with what I've been taught.

Sometimes I think people get on better in life if they do go with the flow - Not cause waves etc. etc. and other people will say Oh she's a nice girl isn't she (of the types who don't stir up dissention whatever) but I believe if you do not agree with something and/or have strong opinions on certain subjects then you should shout it from the rooftops and be ready for a few people to be turned off you though deep down they might admire you and wish they weren't so chicken hearted themselves. But mainly I think it is O.K. to go with the crowd as long as it is just good harmless going but not if some things are against your morals and ideals.

Sometimes it's better not to start a war with people who are obvious idiots to those around them. But 9-11 is an example of the extent of how far people will go for their cause.

Stand up for what you believe in if necessary but hopefully the flow is going with what you believe in.

If your a lemming and have no courage and can't make your own decisions Then you have answered your own question. Personally I never do that I stand on my principles as an Intelligent, educated, woman that thinks for herself and will stand by my principles.

You will have more respect for yourself if you stand for something and stick to it. It shows that you have backbone and character.
