Does it have to do with something about the right side of the brain? Always wondered this because whenever I'm asked a question I have to think about (and retrieve the info from my memory) I glance upwards and to the right.

Your brain needs to assess the question. The eyes darting upward is your mind's way or 're-seeing' the answer.

When doing every day things most of it you can do without thinking and so your eyes stay focused on what you happen to be looking at.

When you have to think hard you use more of your brain to focus on what it is you are trying to retrieve from your memory rather than your average every day task. In doing so you subconsciously allow your eyes to relax as at the moment of hard thinking you don't need them.

Your eyes when totally relaxed go upwards either to the right or left the same as when someone is asleep. However, that is all done subconsciously, but now that you are aware of it you will notice it all the time.

I don't think it is particularly anything to do with which side of your brain you are using to retrieve you memory just some people are lefties and some go to the right.

It does.
The direction / side you are referencing has to do with weather you are referencing memory, or creating information.
This is also why trained observers will watch an individual when they are being questioned to see which way they will glance / look prior to answering a question, to see if the individual is retrieving information or creating (lying).

Bandler and Grinder did a complete study of the different areas of the brain and the functions. When the mind accesses memory--the eyes follow to that area; when we imagine something, it goes to the other sphere; remembering smells; sounds; etc., etc., there are specfice areas that store/access each. It's automatic.

some people glance upward to the left.
i think the person thinking just needs to rid themselves of the sense of sight.
to think better and not be distracted by moving things.
its my guess.
