I agree

In the US at 18 you can smoke, die for you country, be charged as a adult, rent and own property, be married without parental constent, pay taxes (sometimes before), drive (sometimes before depending on your state) and vote

Yet you can't have a beer?

That's wrong.

However nothing magical happens at 18 or 21 or even 25 that makes you a adult or a mature person that only happens with time and experience. BUT since the law in the US is you are an adult at 18 it should be equal across the board.

I agree too, you can vote, go to war, get married (sometimes even earlier than 18), become a legal adult but you can't have a drink? It's silly and we might have less binge drinking problems in this country if the age was lowered and some of the excitement about doing some illegal would be gone.

Maybe so, but more binge drinking that ends up killing young adults happen from ages 18 to 24. The first time my own husband had his first drink ended up with way too many that almost killed him when he was 19 years old. You do not need a beer to make yourself an adult or serve your country.

Give a gun to an 18 year old and teach him to kill. But the same 18 year old is not responsible enough or mature enough to buy a beer and drink it. Hmmm? I think instead of lowering the drinking age we need to raise the fighting age. An 18 year old should not carry a gun, or drink a beer.

This is such a tired OLD question.

When a person joins the military at 18, that person is under the care of superiors who train and pretty much regulate your life. In combat, you are not permitted to make your own decisions. On a day to day basis, you don't do anything you are not told to do. Then, they TELL you what to do, when to do it, how long to do it and when to stop. You are not a free agent able to make your own decisions. The military is replacing parental oversight.

At 18 - up to about 20, your brain is still growing and is not fully developed....it is not fully wired. That's why teenagers do such stupid, stupid stuff and make the worst decisions. When you add alchohol to this mix, it is disasterous. The adolescent body cannot metabolize alcohol the way it will when you are fully matured.

Not that 21 year olds are any better. Most of them are just as goofy as teenagers...but, unfortunately, they are allowed to drink anyway.

Personally, I'd like to see the age raised to 25.

Well I guess because kids at 18 are still immature...Drinking at this age is totally inappropirate because kids tend to abuse alchohol.

I understand what you mean by beeing old enough to die for your country, but I think that's all together different then going on a drinking binge and getting behind the wheel of a car. At least in the military you're being trained for your future and some may believe that there's a purpous behind what you're doing.

This is the exact arguement that went before lawmakers during the Vietnam war. The law was actually changed so that the age of majority was 18, not 21. It changed back to 21 after the war ended.

If 18 year olds can have alcohol, it will cause a disruption in high schools if seniors are able to obtain it. Also, for those going off to college, maybe it's not the best idea to give them alcohol rights right when they get on their own for the first time. If you want to say 19 instead of 21, then that's fine.

I think the legal drinking age should be 25. Most people are not mature enough to handle themselves properly intoxicated until this age or even older. Look at all the alcohol related deaths and they should back me up 100%.

Well, it could be because people believe that others will be more reckless at 18 than 21 and have a higher chance of driving while intoxicated. Also, our brains our still developing at 18 and alcohol can mess that up,
