I have lived in several states (IN, FL, and VA) and never before have I been required to present an embossed copy of my marriage certificate to get my driver's license. I was wondering if WV was the only backwards state to require this. Please tell me your state when you respond. Thanks.

Sorry all, let me clarify... this is a requirement because I have, in the past, changed my name. It is not required of all drivers. Yes it would be silly to require this of a 16 yr old.

A marriage cert. is only needed because I no longer use my parent's last name even though my married name is reflected on my current ID's. I even have a US Passport and that's not good enough. I still need to show that my maiden name was changed through marriage.

I have never heard of this, most people do not even have a marriage license at the time they get a license.

Now when I got married and wanted a driver's license with my new last name I had to, in order to show why I was getting a new ID and name.

I have lived all throughout the Southern states and a few out west and have never seen anything like that before. What doesn't make sense is - what about the new, beginner drivers who are 16 - hopefully they don't have to be married to get their driver's license.
Check with the local DMV - they should be able to clarify this up for you.

I've lived in New Jersey, Georgia, Florida and California and
I have never heard of that before. It's definitely NOT required in any of the states I've lived. Wow it sounds like West Virginia is behind the time. What are they expecting for you to be more responsible when you are driving because you are married. I would love to know the reason behind that requirement...seems like a discrimination to me don't you?

That doesn't sound right. I don't think ANY state requires a copy of a marriage certificate. Unless maybe you're trying to use your married name and it hasn't been legally changed or something? Weird.

They would only require a marriage certificate if you were trying to CHANGE YOUR NAME from the license you previously had. I was required to provide a marriage certificate when I moved to UT from FL after getting married.

No, not in Oregon. I'm guessing you don't have to be married to get a license but since you are married they want it for some other reason?

I live in wisconsin and we do not have to have a marriage cert. I don't understand why they care if you are married or not it should matter if your married or not it should matter if you can drive or not!
