It is the only logical reaction, since GOD almighty is all-seeing and merciful, that everyone (even the ones that don't admit it) first think of HIM when there's trouble.
Regarding "not remembering" him in other instances; while God not being present in everyone's mind all the time, I know that in these current times we're living in, he's much more present than he ever was!!!!

First of all, read 'The Count of Monte Cristo' it talks about this stuff.+its a very interesting book, not a bible or anything. (my favorite book!)
Second, I think that people remember God only at the times of trouble because if their life has gone well, they've never needed to depend on any source but themselfs. But when something goes wrong, they have to believe in something, or they might kill themself, with no hope whatsoever. People who have never prayed before, pray in a time of need.
p.s. these is only my theory
p.s.s. It might not make a whole load of sense because it's kinda hard to explain.

I guess that it is in the same way that a child only thinks of their parents when they need them, ie, an infant out playing in the paddling pool with some friends doesn't give their mum or dad a second thought while they are happily playing, but if they slip and fall, the first people they think of are their parents, because they need them to give them a big hug and kiss to make it better!

Because I think religion fills that role in human psychology.
As an atheist, I used to be disturbed because whenever I ran into something I needed but was helpless to affect the outcome, I usually defaulted to my old habit of praying for help.
First I was disturbed and considered it a weakness that I would throw away my logic and freedom, and reduce myself to depending on faith during times of distress instead of evaluating the situation, realizing that I am helpless to affect the outcome and resigning myself to that fact.
Now, I have come to realize that that was actually one of the mechanisms that brought about the development of religion in human society. "The fear of the unknown", and the "The feeling of helplessness felt in situations that cant be changed" are the main reasons why religion were developed in human society in the first place.
Now, as science grows, the "unknown" continues to shrink and religion has largely receded. (A couple thousand years ago, jews believed that a rainbow in the sky signified that god wouldnt destroy the world with a flood again, now with science, everyone with a grasp of high-school physics knows that rainbows occur due to refraction of light). But, the feeling of helplessness humans feel in situations beyond their control will never go away. That way religion is bound to be around with us, albeit in a diminishing role for a long time to come.

That isn't always true. I know for sure Muslims have to pray several times a day. Christians (not sure what type) often pray before bed. And many people think of God when they are thankful.

be cause people are selfish and normally only think of themselves, when things r going their way they think they don't need help, BUT WHEN THE BOTTOM FALLS OUT GOD IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO NEVER LETS GO.
People look to him for guidence during these times. I wonder what the world would b like if God gave us the same amount of time we give him.
if he smiled at us the same amount of time we gave him each week.

Because when everything is going well in their lives they think they're responsible and in charge but when they're in big trouble that they can't get out of on their own they suddenly turn to God for help.

God wants it that way. People that let their faith get weak and then wonder why bad things keep happening to them have to remember that God wants them to need him. He will keep putting obstacle after obstacle it their lives until they either ask for help or for forgiveness. Have you ever read "Footprints", it's a perfect example of how it is with God. When you are at your weakest, he is at his strongest. We are his children and he wants us to need him. Take care and God bless.
