Uh, just don't go to Oakland at all. Except for the Oakland Hills, the Montclaire area, there are no good parts of Oakland.

My friend who lives there swears that her neighborhood (East Oakland, near Lake Merritt) is safe, and most of the murders happen in West Oakland. I would suggest that you visit with a local, so that you don't accidentally end up somewhere you don't want to go.

I'm an Aussie. I went to Oakland with friends while in Calif.
Got my car and luggage ripped off just parking on main street. My friend (young aussie girl) needed rescuing from Pimps (not too bad), and saw and met some heavy dudes even in food outlets. **** it's not probably a place to holiday with your family.Oh yeah, even got car towed by cops, for no reason. And this is all in one day.
As most people said ALL of Oakland is a good place not to visit.

Are you talking about Oakland county? I was born there, my parents grew up there and I lived next to there for 10 years. If you are talking about Oakland County, there's a neighborhood off Dequinder Road that is very nice and clean, but I have to warn you two of my cousins got approached by a man when they were in walking in that neighborhood, so if you have teenage girls be careful.
