I have helped a many many people out there, some are kin and some are friends, but I still help out folks any chance that I can. I do it because I want to. I enjoy helping out folks if I can, young or elder, it don't matter to me. Why do it for free? Well I do it for free because now days it is hard to find any one that will be willing to do anything for free. I have mowed big yards (3/4 acre to an acre) that the grass was really high (6" to a foot) tall and with a push mower, cleaned someones house, helped folks move(including an ex boyfriend), taken friends to the hospital when they were sick. That is just part of what I have done, all for free! All a person has to do is either ask me to do something for them or I hear that they need help and I am there. Some has offered to pay me but I will not take their money. And I have been used a few times but they have to live with what they did, not me.

You could just be a good person! Not everyone expects payment for niceties. Compassion, empathy and good karma takes you a long way in life.
As a matter of fact when it comes to extending a helping hand, if you've not been asked for help, I can quite see how this question could be turned around and ask why would you expect payment?

That would be me and I do it because I can. I've always believed that if you're fortunate enough to have clothes to wear and a roof over your head, you should extend your hand to help someone who isnt as fortunate. I dont know what kind of person that makes me, but I'm not about to change and I'll be 70 in January.

The person who revels in the feeling of helping those in need. It serves a purpose for them as well, filling something in them that is often empty, but unnoticed by those who do not take the time to notice. It is because payment can be something like a smile, a made-day, a hug. It's called being a good person, a Samaritan...something that has gone way too far by the wayside.

Though I'm Catholic, the answer is in a Yiddish word: "Mensch". It means someone with humanity. At my Naval retirement ceremony I mentioned the influence a former high school teacher of mine had on me and I repeated his admonition that, whatever you are in life, be a mensch.
I add to that the words of Hilel:
"If I am not for someone else, who am I?
If I am only for myself, what am I?"

America is the most giving nation of all nations (think about it...who's the first one 'there' when another nation needs help in an emergency..[oh leave the war out of it]?)...because that's the way we're brought up.

Like the story of Daniel and the lion with the thorn in its paw. A little compassion never hurts and may reward you in the future.

Loving, compassionate, giving, concerned folks... Because it's the right thing to do... it's called being decent human beings.
Why would you want money for doing the right thing ????
Compensation for being a decent human... you don't give to get things back... you give because you want to... it's is all about how you feel about yourself, why would you want or expect something in return is the question?

People do it for free because they care about other people's wellbeing, they think about themselves being in the same situation and needing help, or a little of both.
