take the MSF course before you buy anything.

I have 10 years of driving with zero accidents. My 700cc cruiser costs me $18 per month through State Farm (though I also have a business policy, a car policy, and a renters policy, so I get a discount). That's full coverage with comprehensive and collision, not just liability, and with very low deductibles. For a first time driver I wouldn't expect it could be more than double that.

They don't care what kind of bike. A 250cc sport bike is far more dangerous (easier to get out of control) than a 600cc cruiser, but the cruiser will be more money for insurance. They also don't care about the age of the bike. (At least most companies don't.) They only look at the size of the engine and your own driving history (and your zip code if you get comprehensive).

DEFINITELY take an MSF course (http://www.msf-usa.org/) before you buy a bike. You'll start out on a 125 to 250cc bike (the regulations require that learners use nothing bigger than 250ccs to learn) and you can try out a variety of bikes. I think there were 6 or 8 different styles when I took my class. It amazed me how different they all feel. While I'll eventually get a sport bike, I liked the feel of the cruisers the best so that's what I bought. If I hadn't done that I probably would have gone out and bought a 600cc sport bike and wrecked it shortly thereafter.

The two bikes I would recommend are:

1.Kawasaki Ninja 250 Sport

2.Dual Sport Suzuki DR650SE

Both are great bikes.

Suzuki DR200. Insurance goes by the CC's of the bike. They consider you age too but cc's is where its at. Plus it can go anywhere and are inexpensive to purchase. Lots of used ones around with low miles.
