Well, I've learnt something today about the O! Good question if other people learn something. I have been told, although I don't have documentary evidence, that the X came about as a Christian greeting, meaning 'yours in Christ', using the Greek X. And they also kissed each on the lips when greeting, hence the link.

Auty is wrong, x = kiss, o = hug
In ancient times when few people could write, even their own name, they would make an X and then kiss it to attest to the authenticity of the X. The O, I believe, is a super-simplified emoticon, representing a person with outstretched arms wrapping them around another person in a hug.

x has always meant kiss. as for the o meaning hugs, perhaps it is like when you hug someone you put you arms around them in the shape of an o
