Something that is completely stereotyped.
The stereotypes are:
Emo people cut their wrists
Emo people are depressed
Emo people are suicidal
Most of the answers you'll get will be somewhere along the lines of that.
But it's seriously a bunch of crap. Emo actually began as a style of music, (and it stood for emotional), then it became a label for people who listen to the music. Eventually, like any other label, it started becoming stereotyped.
I hate people who stereotype it..
And when I actually learned what it ACTUALLY was, unlike most other people, I began hating stereotypes.
What I'm getting at is that it's actually just a style.

Emotive hardcore is simply a genre of music. Music with much stronger displays of emotion than most genres. It has a huge following of people who either are in it for the music or very depressed and stupid kids that give true emo listeners a bad name. Don't let the label turn you away, there is actually some good stuff in the genre. Don't pay attention to the stupid poser teens who cut themselves and act depressed when they have good lives because not all of emotive hardcore listeners are like that. And please, please, try to be understanding and tolerant of the music, as people have different tastes. Thank you. //_^

Really just a word, not much meaning to it. It is a fad, but it is growing popular. Other cliques seem to often look down upon goths for their own unnecessary reason.
Edit: I read above answers, and just because someone is emo doesn't mean they cut themselves. Or that they're depressed. It is just a clique. They like the clothes and music. It's the same with preps, they all wear the same kind of clothes but that doesn't mean all of them are rich and do drugs.

emo is basically depression in a teen, it stands for emotional, but a lot of the time the people cut themselves, and if someone cut themselves for the heck of it they would be considered emo

It is a genre of "rock music" with I suppose a clothing "style" to go along with it.
