Absolutely not.
Vista claims to run with 512mb RAM. It will, but sloooooooooowly - and if you try to run anything else, you will end up banging you head against the wall. Trust me. My wallpaper and screensaver are set to none, yet Vista was as slow as molasses. I bought another 512mb chip which brings me to 1024 RAM - and now it works fine for me.
Note: I don't do games or videos. If you intend to use Vista for games, better go for 2G RAM if your computer can handle it.

The Windows Vista Tool will examine your PC and tell you if Vista will work (which, with 256 RAM, I know it won't).
