The room that houses the books in our office is generally closed off. The books are on bookcases in the room. The room is air conditioned.

Today I went in to find the books covered in mold! Thousands of dollars worth of literature has been destroyed.

It's looking like there was a water problem from the A/C unit - but they are still looking into it.

Could be a water leak soaking the ceiling, walls, rugs or carpets in the room.

Sounds like a lack of ventilation to me. If the room is air conditioned does the glass in the room have condensation on them in the morning? If so you might consider a dehumidifier or opening the door to the room to allow air flow. Mold loves stagnant, humid air. This is assuming that you don't find any wet spots on the floor as the previous poster stated.

Are only the covers of the books covered in mold? If the books are worth saving to you (whether for pecuniary or sentimental reasons) books can be restored. It will take a while, especially if you have a large collection, but it can be done.

High humidity. Anything over 40% humidity will cause mold.
