In California, a DV case, felony, is 273.5 pc. he could get up to 4 years in state prison, or probation and jail time. The issue is his criminal history, or the lack thereof. In Cal, it is only a $100 fine for the mary jane he had.
Now, as to you. If this is the first time, you better seriously consider if you want him in your life. I doubt it is the first time, but this one seemed more intense and you got really scared. Unless he gets help, and often even then, the violence toward you will increase. Then he will again promise it never will happen again. You need to learn about the cycle of violence. Save yourself. Don't worry about trying to save him. He is in jail because of what he did. No, it was not your fault. No, you did not drive him to it. He hurt you. You were not asking for it.

everyone seems to be giving you opinions about domestic violence without answering your questions. Since you don't say where you are, I'll give you Texas' laws:
marijuana possession: depends on how much. if it is less than 2 ounces, up to 6 months in jail.
domestic violence: assuming some injury and no deadly weapon: up to a year in jail. If he used a deadly weapon or caused serious injuries, then 2-20 years in prison.
sentence could be anywhere in that range, or up to 10 years probation depending on severity.
whether or not he pleads guilty is completely up to him and his attorney. there are many things for him to consider and weigh out, including how a guilty plea will effect him in the future.
All this being said, leave him, he sounds like a loser.

This ISN'T what you want to hear, but if he is in jail for domestic violence against YOU, then you NEED TO LEAVE. You don't want to, plus he says he will change. But you need to get out. The sentence all depends on how brutal the violence was. A few bruises, not too much jail. Broken bones and injuries hospitalized for are worse...

if your man is locked up for domestic violence and it didnt happen to you LEAVE ANYWAY. Because eventually it could be you. Some states the max for dv is 15 with a possibility of early release. Now the posession of mary jane depends on how much he had and also his past criminal background. He is going to have to plead guilty to the drug posession he would be retarded not to.

I used to fight with my boyfriend. I slammed his face into the steering wheel and punched him in the ear. After we got home I hit him with a 2 liter bottle. He then broke my nose and picked up a chair. We have been together six years and it s been about 4 years since we have hit each other. People can change and our relationship couldn t be better. Don t listen to these people telling you what to do with your life. Everyone is different.
