FIRST and foremost, a person who will stand up for and defend individual liberties. And is a person who will appoint nothing but liberty-defending social progressives to the Supreme Court.
Bigotry is a deal-breaker for me!
Once I know that the candidate is NO bigot (e.g., with respect to women's right to choose abortion, and gays' right to same-sex marriage) -- THEN I'll consider other aspects. But NO candidate who is not fully an egalitarian will *ever* get my vote.
And -- very happily, as an Iowan, I'll be voting in the vitally-important IOWA Caucuses!

I agree with most of the other answers. For me, it is someone who isn't afraid to express their views and beliefs. I'm tired of politicians telling us what they "think" we want to hear. I want someone with some guts!!!
