In the long run, the competition for natural resources is only going to get worse. Add to that the ever present regional, linguistic and religious differences. So, while I think world unity is possible in theory, I don't see that as all that probable.

World Unity is just an Utopian dream. It can never be acheived as just like any other theory as theories do not take into consideration the most important factor which is Human Nature.
Any invented, tried, theory/dream/quest since man started to walk upright has failed as it never took in consideration human nature where there is the changing of the mind constantly taking place every single day. Any ism has failed as none of the theories made the world a better place. Religion and politics are mainly to blame with powerful people hiding behind democracy, communism and socialism pulling the strings.
Just everything else, world unity is a sublime thought that remains a thought and can't be attained. Hatred, jealousy, cruelty, racism etc have still kept rearing their ugly heads. Some parts of history show this quite wellas it shows that ignorance, greed and other evil human attributes sit quite comfortably well.
It has nothing to do by being positive or negative but by being a realist watching closely human nature.

Almost anything is possible.
Growing up I never envisaged Germany reunifying, nevermind all of Europe coming together as one nation.
World unity is definitely possible but it will need a large change in attitude from a lot of people. We need to start putting the needs of the planet and all of its inhabitants first instead of the 'me first' attitude that seems to be prevailing these days.
We do have to define 'unity' though. We will never have complete agreement on all issues but we could have a real political structure that controlled the whole world if we really wanted one.
It would of course mean sharing the world's resources a little more evenly and thats a scary thought for all the people hording the wealth but in the long run I believe that a world government would benefit all of mankind (and all life forms on Earth)

Well in some ways we are already united, we just aren't in agreement or harmony! And no, I don't think that will ever happen. We are all too "tribal". Too many people only care about their own needs... not enough empathy, compassion, forgiveness or kindness. Shame really, if people cooperated and all worked for the greater good of ALL mankind, there would be enough to go round for everyone... but people are too greedy. Some take more than their fare share... its about status and standing. Too many people think THEY are right. We need to learn to live along side each other and allow people to have their own thoughts, beliefs etc.

The governments already have this unity that you speak of. But it isn't the unity that we want. It's always been there, they all work together.
True unity of all the people, I suppose, could happen, but it would take a catastrophe.

Not only is it possible but it is happening. Not in a good way though. Globalisation has unified the world, but the result is that it is now easier to exploit the poor and ignore people's needs on a larger scale.

There isn't anything existing that is outside of the unity. It is 'thinking' that things are separate that creates the problem of duality (good/bad) etc.
In what way are you separate from your environment? If you fall down dead right now your environment will physically absorb you.
