Has he been quoted on the record about this? Just curious.

He has been asked this and his response has been that as a third party candidate he wouldn't have received the attention he has now. He ran as a libertarian in '88 and no press coverage. Now as a Republican with libertarian ideals, Paul is finally getting the attention he deserves.

Paul is running as a Republican libertarian, not as a Libertarian. Notice the capitalization of the R and the L. It makes all the difference.

He's a Republican, so he's running as one. If he ran as a Libertarian he'd get much less press coverage for his positions. And his best chance (albeit might slim) of getting elected is as a Republican: get the Republican nomination an he's only running against the candidate from one major party. Run as a Libertarian and he's running against candidates from two.

Ron Paul wanted to have the support of a big party and it is the reason that he wanted to be a Republican rather than a Libertarian and lose his quest for the Presidency.

The political system has been corrupted by the Republican and Democratic Parties. They have manipulated the system to insure that they have the advantage in any election and any third party is handicapped.

yes- he has in 20 years in congress he has been a republican who ran for one year as the libertarian candidate for president-he doesnt run as libertarian because although he might tilt that way he is "more" republican than many of the candidates running -he is on record stating this (not his exact words)

He doesn't need to run as a libertarian.

Because he is trying to bring back the Conservative Republicans views the Republicans once had. The Republican party, right now, is being run by a bunch of former Liberal Democrats.
