There is a "ton" of information available on the Internet on motivation. For "self motivation" or "self motivation techniques" just type these two phrases in quotes into Yahoo! web search. A number of informative links comes up some of which are for literature, some for forums and most for free. Wikipedia has good summaries.

A quick, "off the top of the head" answer is, to first, have an achievable goal and then just "stick to it through thick or thin."

I always wanted a Harley and later found that they were extremely expensive so I rode foreign jobs to maintain the fun of motorcycleing. Honestly, one night at work I saw an add for a bike which was unusually cheap ($7,500) and decided if I can get the loan I will make the purchase and eat ramen noodles and hotdogs if necessary. Take a few minutes once a week to imagine yourself after achieving the goal you have.

It helps to have your goals clearly defined, a game plan figured out on how to achieve it, and a system in place to remind you and keep you on track. The support of other people to give you ideas and encourage you is also helpful. I rely on a website called Sproximo to keep me motivated...
