Mine would be Hunter S. Thompson because he worked his *** off to hone his craft and he never compromised anything.

Che Guverra. He gave up so much to fight for his people and his beliefs. He could have been a rich doctor but instead became the symbol for revolutions all over the world.

Four people
Mom - She had enough will to say "f*ck this" and made our life better. She taught me how to live and love life.
Uncle Dan - He showed me what being a good person is and you don't have to have a family to live a good life.
Grandpa - The man that has been there and done that. He used to watch the history channel until he realized he was there. That man is full of advice that is priceless.
Aunt Sarah - She taught me to have a good life no matter what and the simplest things can be beautiful.
All these people have taught me so much and I look up to them all. I was taught well and learned more than many. Because of these people, it's me that my friends look up to. It's me they ask what to use when sick. It's me they ask how to get a good deal on a car. I thank those who helped raise me every chance I get and go out of my way to do it.

I have always looked up to Steve Irwin.
When I was in college I was undecided on a major, and then i watched a episode of the Crocodile Hunter, From there I decide on Herpetology.
I have now graduated with 2 different wildlife conservation degrees and I am the resident herpetologist at a Nature Preserve in Ky.
I give a lot of credit to him, his passion for wildlife made me who I am.

There are many, but you only asked for one...hard for me to choose between Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Theresa...and many more.
Why Martin Luther King Jr.? I consider him a very courageous, spiritual man and admire his ability to engage all people into thinking about matters of equality and social change while at the same time emphasizing using peaceful, non-violent tactics. The world at that time, especially, was full of hate, discrimination and violence against blacks, and he did not, even for an instant, feel the need for retaliation against the suffering of these people. His example is something we can all learn much from.

I would say my parents.
Note: Did anyone notice that like the 5th answer or so said "my father" and go 2 thumbs down? What the hell is up with that? Only mothers can be good parents?

My father--because he has stood by his principles for 70 years. He's been married to the same woman for 46 years (my mom is also amazing) and he always told me to believe in myself and I can achieve anything. My dad is the most amazing person I've met in my life--they don't make people like him anymore.
Edit: PinkCamo... I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. It's nice of you to remember him in that way. My condolences to you.

I hate to name a pop singer but I have to say Shakira.
Her songwriting is improving. I love her music. I never get sick of it. She lifts me up or brings me to tears. But also, she took a history class at UCLA this past summer. I understand that she was pretty low key about it. She does a lot of good work in her native Colombia.
I know you said to name only 1 but I want to name another one, closer to me.
My parents. They have done a lot for me and have inspired me to work harder and smarter. (Dad: I'm finally getting the message you have been trying to get into me since I was a baby probably. I get it. Better later than never.)

Joss Whedon. He's a freakin' GENIUS and does great work. He's brilliantly funny, as well as brilliantly brilliant. And his values are spot on. A real humanist, with compassion and insight.
I really admire the guy.

My grandmother. She's German and met my grandfather at the end of the war. After they married, she moved here and basically raised her kids alone while he was off for the Army. When she first came here, she spoke no English and learned from her kids, who picked it up at school. She never quits.
