If you are browsing you are connecting. Firewalls do not 'connect' to the internet, they stand between the internet and your system. A Router helps route connections from the Modem, to the Internet, and stands between the computer and the Modem, with the Modem supplying the connection from the ISP.

It sounds like something is interferring in your ability to download items. If you are the computers administrator, then something went wrong with your ability to download. It could be that your firewall has run amuck on you, so try removing it and reinstalling it fresh. Most firewalls allow certain default programs to access the internet, and blocks others.

It is also possible that somehow your browser is simply no longer working correctly. Try removing it and reinstalling it.

It may be you have a virus you have as yet not removed from your system. Try going to one of those HijackThis sites and receive assistance from vollunteers who aid people in ridding their system of malware. You would need to be able to download tools though, so you may have to use a different computer, download to that computer, put the program on CD, pop the CD into your computers drive, and install the program(s) off of that CD.

There are several HijackThis forums across the Internet. Simply put HijackThis into your search box and several will appear on the search page. Read a few posts on some of them to see which you feel most comfortable with, then sign up and log on and post your question.

There is usually a "read this first" post on these sites to get you going. If you are having difficulty downloading stuff and need some extra help, don't be afraid to tell them this. If you are unsure how to download from another computer and put the program on a CD to transfer to the stricken computer, tell them so they can give you detailed help.

Good luck and I hope you find your answer soon.
