Why does the reaction of Chromium and HCl turn the solution to green? And why does the reaction of Chromium and H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) turn the solution to bluish green? Does anyone know???

Cr +2HCl--->CrCl2 +H2(g)

chromium compounds are green-blue


Cr +H2SO4--->CrSO4 +H2

chromium sulfate is a different color than chromium chloride

Transition metals make colored solutions. The color is dependent on the metals and the nonmetal in the compound.

The reaction with HCl produces Cr+++ with Cl- ions in the coordination sphere. The Cl- ions interact with Cr+++ d-electrons to produce a green color. The product with H2SO4 has more H2O molecules in the coordination sphere. These interactwith the d-electrons to produce a purple color.
